Regenerative procedures are also used in order to place dental implants. In order to place a dental implant, the bone has to be thick enough to support it. Sometimes when the bone is too thin, we can augment the area with a bone graft in an effort to regain the bone thickness needed. This procedure involves placing the bone graft material under the gum tissue to your desired thickness.

The bone graft is sometimes mixed with growth factors to help accentuate the healing process. A membrane is then placed over the bone graft and the area is sutured to allow for undisturbed healing. Think of a membrane as a “Band-Aid” covering the bone to help hold it in place while healing occurs. Approximately, 3-6 months later the bone will have healed enough to support the placement of a dental implant.

Dr. Quintero may need to increase the amount of bone in a particular area for proper dental implant placement once he has examined it with our in-house 3D scanner (CBCT). Recent developments in bone grafting techniques have made implant treatment possible in cases that would have been impossible just a few years ago.

Guided bone regeneration (GBR): removing a tooth or multiple teeth

 

Bone grafts are used to help aid the healing process of bone in a protected and guided way. Dr. Quintero’s preferred method is to place a bone graft at the same visit that the tooth is extracted; this will prevent shrinkage and losing the width, height, and thickness of the natural bone so a dental implant or a natural-looking bridge may be created to enhance your natural smile.

Different types of bone grafting materials are now available:

  1. Autograft: Tissue is transferred from one position to another within the same individual.
  2. Allograft: Tissue transferred from one individual to another of the same species after the bone has been properly processed. University of Miami (DFDBA, FDBA ).
  3. Xenograft: Tissue transferred from one species to another species.
  4. Alloplast: A synthetic graft or inert foreign body implanted into tissue.

At HQ Dontics and Associates we only use Allograft.

 

Guided tissue regeneration (GTR): keeping your teeth

 

It is a delicate procedure to recreate new bone, gingiva, and support around your teeth when periodontal disease has affected them. Its aim is to help you maintain your natural teeth. Minor surgery is made to access the diseased bone surrounding your tooth, followed by the complete removal of toxins, calculus, and diseased tissue to allow better visibility of your healthy bone. New bone and a Collagen membrane are placed to re-create your lost bone and gingiva.

Aesthetic bridges

 

The bone regeneration can enhance the gingival architecture and help establish a natural smile. A combination of bone grafts and collagen membranes is used when tooth extraction to prevent shrinkage of your natural bone. Once it has healed; your gingiva (Gum) below the bridge will have a natural and healthy-looking appearance.

Gum graft

 

Exposed Tooth roots are the result of gum recession, heavy traumatic brushing, and/or thin gingiva. Gum graft surgery will repair the defect and help to prevent additional recession and bone loss by increasing the thickness of your gingiva and on some occasions, covering the exposed roots.

During the gum graft surgery, we may take gum tissue from the roof of your mouth or a tissue bank to cover your exposed root. This can be done for one tooth or several teeth making your gum line uniform and reducing teeth sensitivity.

Gum Graft surgery will give you a beautiful new smile and improve your periodontal health.
